Why We Live Here - Winter
Blog Image

A common question in January is, “Why do you/we live in Minnesota?  It’s way too cold there.” I’ll even admit that I’ve asked myself that question while getting into a cold car at -10°.  Day after day of cold and gloom can wear you down.

As I was driving to work recently, I was reminded why I live here.  It was the second day of a slight January thaw and there was a slight ice fog in the air.  For those of you from warmer climates, an ice fog occurs when the humidity is high and the temperature is just below freezing. The moisture crystallizes and sticks to anything cold, creating a layer of frost on any cold object.

I was driving across a ribbon of road with frozen lakes on both sides.  The lakes were surrounded by frost-covered trees and the sun was rising behind me, making the frost sparkle and glow.  It was a picture-postcard moment that made up for the sub-zero temps we had endured the previous week.

As I drove on, I realized I had just experienced a moment of grace … a single moment in time when everything in my little world was exactly as it should be.

The lesson learned: It’s easy to get drawn into the craziness of my business and personal life or to spend my day planning for the future.  The danger is that I’m no longer in the moment and I might have missed the beauty of that winter morning.

And that’s why I live here.

Comments The beauty of winter
People from warmer climates seem to love snow and ice more than we do. Perhaps it is the novelty of it.
