What a beautiful day … 64 degrees and sunny! We’ve all been waiting for this day; no scraping snow off your car, no dodging puddle while snow is melting, and a chance to shed our heavy winter coats. It seemed like a fresh new beginning overnight. Coming into my office the next day, I was struck with the fact that my own desk needed a new beginning, too. I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the post-it notes, miscellaneous to-do lists and magazines waiting to be read. While my desk has never been a shining example of neatness and order, it currently could only be compared to a paper snowstorm.
I started with all those post-it notes … it took only a few minutes to put the phone numbers into my contact list and transfer all the various “to do” items into a single document that I then ordered by client. Next came the stack of magazines and articles that had been routed to me and found a permanent home on the corner of my desk. A quick scan showed several articles on the same subjects … I read one main article of each set thoroughly and skimmed the rest for any additional information, crossed my name off the list and passed them on to the next person. I then grabbed several folders, labeled them, and took the remaining printed emails and program information and filed quickly by client so I could later file into correct 3-ring binders … not perfect, but at least there was a semblance of order on my desk. I found that by taking a couple of hours to do these simple office cleaning tasks that I had been putting off for weeks, my mind was clearer and ready to start the week, I accomplished more tasks today and actually left the office at the same time as my co-workers … something that hasn’t happened in weeks. So my advice if you’re feeling overwhelmed at the office … just take the time, no excuses, to clean up some of those nagging tasks. You’ll feel better for it, be more productive, and have the time to enjoy a little of that extra sunlight in the evenings. |
